What may cause a demon to be able to enter into someone?

Possible cause for a demon to be able to enter someone: having remained evil (with knowledge of it and willingly)

A sin committed (with knowledge and willingly) in the past by a person may be a reason for a demon to have entered that person.

There are 2 explicit accounts in which a demon may be described explicitly to enter someone: Matthew 12:45/Luke 11:26 and Judas in John 13:27/Luke 22:3.

Their sin did not seem to have been done in ignorance of it being evil, as they would have been warned several times of it before that, and so it could be concluded that they remained evil KNOWINGLY

Furthermore, if they continued being EVIL, one may assume that they may not have been WILLING to stop being EVIL (in contrast with maybe struggling with stopping being EVIL because of compulsion but not willingly). If so, then they may have remained EVIL WILLINGLY.

As a result of remaining EVIL KNOWINGLY and WILLINGLY, demons may end up coming to enter them.

You can find evidence for that below:

Inference from Matthew 12:45/Luke 11:26:

In the accounts of Matthew 12:45/Luke 11:26, it is written about an "unclean spirit" (Matthew 12:43) that "it-proceeds and takes-along with itself seven other spirits (more) evil (than) itself. And HAVING-GONE-IN, THEY-DWELL THERE, and the last (state of) that person becomes worse (than) the first. So it-will-be also (with) this evil generation" (Matthew 12:45).

In that passage, there is an unclean spirit and "other spirits (more) EVIL (than) itself" (Matthew 12:45), and this would enter a person, and Jesus added that "SO IT-WILL-BE also (with) this EVIL generation" (Matthew 12:45). This is describing EVIL spirits also being able to enter EVIL people specifically.

These EVIL people were already warned by Christ a few verses earlier several times, as He said to them: "Either MAKE THE TREE GOOD and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad. For the tree is-known by the fruit. Brood (of) vipers! How are-YOU-able to-speak good (things), BEING EVIL?" (Matthew 12:33-34), and "SOME (of) THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES responded (to) Him, saying “Teacher, WE-WANT TO-SEE (a) SIGN from You”. But the (One), having-responded, said (to) them — “(An) EVIL and adulterous GENERATION IS-SEEKING-FOR (a) SIGN" (Matthew 12:38-39), this was "this EVIL GENERATION" (Matthew 12:45) to which EVIL spirits would also be able to enter them.

Because they did not repent even after being warned several times by Jesus that they were EVIL, it could be assumed that they would then remain EVIL KNOWINGLY

Furthermore, if they continued being EVIL, one may assume that they may not have been WILLING to stop being EVIL (in contrast with maybe struggling with stopping being EVIL because of compulsion but not willingly). If so, then they would remain EVIL WILLINGLY.

As a result of remaining EVIL KNOWINGLY and WILLINGLY, EVIL spirits may end up coming to enter them.

Inference from Judas in John 13:27/Luke 22:3:

In the accounts of John 13:27/Luke 22:3, it is written about "Judas" (John 13:26) that "at that time Satan ENTERED into that (one)" (John 13:27).

Earlier, it was written that "the devil already having-put into the heart (of) Judas, (son of) Simon Iscariot, that (he) should-hand Him over" (John 13:2). Here the desire to hand Jesus over would have been conceived in the heart of Judas. Judas would have had a part in that, as James wrote: "each (one) is-tempted BY (HIS) OWN DESIRE (WHILE) being-drawn-away and ENTICED. THEN THE DESIRE, HAVING-CONCEIVED, gives-birth to sin" (James 1:14-15).

Judas then sinned against the body of the Lord by not discerning correctly the body of Jesus and desiring to hand him over to death, as Jesus "having-taken bread and having-blessed (it), Jesus broke it. And having-given (it to) the disciples, He-said, “Take, eat. THIS IS MY BODY”." (Matthew 26:26). But Judas, "Then having-dipped the piece-of-BREAD, He-takes and gives (it to) JUDAS, (son of) Simon Iscariot. And after the piece-of-BREAD, at that time Satan ENTERED into that (one)" (John 13:26-27).

Judas would even have been warned before that, as prior to when Jesus said in Matthew 26:26 "THIS IS MY BODY" and then gave the bread, it was written: "“Truly I-say (to) you that one of you will-hand Me over”. And (while) being extremely grieved, each one began to-say (to) Him, “I am not (the one, am I), Lord?” And the (One), having-responded, said, “The (one) having-dipped (his) hand with Me in the bowl — this (one) will-hand Me over" (Matthew 26:21-23), and "And having-responded, Judas, the (one) handing Him over, said, “I am not (the one, am I), Rabbi?” He-says (to) him, “You said (it)”." (Matthew 26:25). So even though Judas was told here that it was him, and so had KNOWLEDGE of the sin he wanted to commit, he still WILLINGLY took the piece of bread after that in the next verse Jesus said about this bread that "THIS IS MY BODY" (Matthew 26:26).

In John, prior to it being written about "Judas" (John 13:26) that "at that time Satan ENTERED into that (one)" (John 13:27), Judas was already warned several times in a more implicit manner. For example, some verses earlier it is written that after Jesus washed the feet of the disciples He said: "“The (one) having-bathed has no need except to-wash (his) feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean — but not all (of you)”. "For He-knew the (one) handing Him over. For this reason He-said that “You-are not all clean”" (John 13:10-11). And again after that, "Jesus was-troubled (in His) spirit. And He-testified and said “Truly, truly, I-say (to) you that one of you will-hand Me over”." (John 13:21). 7 chapters earlier in John, Jesus also already warned Judas implicitly, saying: "Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is (a) devil?” Now He-was-speaking (of) Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. For this (one), one of the twelve, was-going to-hand Him over" (John 6:70-71).

From this, it may be assumed that Judas continued to remain EVIL KNOWINGLY and WILLINGLY, and as a result SATAN may have ended up coming to enter him.

Inference from mercy:

In the Bible, casting out demons can be considered having MERCY on someone. For more information:

If having mercy on someone can be needed for a demon to be cast out, then it may follow that mercy was needed for a reason.

In the Bible, mercy can be needed for example when someone has sinned. It is written: "having-gone, learn what it-means: ‘I-desire MERCY, and not (a) sacrifice’. FOR I-did not come to-call righteous (ones), but SINNERS" (Matthew 9:13).
